About Finca Los Maderos

My name is Mirthel, and I’m a coffee farmer. My home, coffee farm “Los Maderos” is located 1,100 Meters above Sea level in Nicaragua. The story of this generation of producers started with my grandmother – and matriarch of the family – Ana María González. She started with the production of coffee from scratch, as she saw this as an opportunity to start her own business and to leave a legacy for her family. My grandmother worked laboriously to introduce herself in the coffee business, an industry ruled mostly by men, and thankfully she found support in the Sopexcca Cooperative, with whom we have been partners ever since, and until this day, for 18 years.

I grew up in the coffee farm, since I can recall, surrounded by green coffee trees in this hidden paradise where I first fell in love with coffee, and where I learned that growing coffee is not just a source of income; to me, coffee represents joyful moments in family, but also hard work, dedication, and discipline. This love for coffee and the desire to continue with the family tradition led me to study Agronomy to continue to offer coffee of the best quality. My desire is to always continue learning about the coffee industry, so recently I had the opportunity to join a curse with Sopexcca Cooperative about quality control of coffee, in which I acquired new learnings that I have put into practice in the farm to produce excellent coffee, always considering our commitment to environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

In my family, we never stop innovating, and with our newest project, we seek to renew the farm's infrastructure with the construction of a washing machine to improve the wet milling process. This project will be possible thanks to the seed capital granted by Grounds For Empowerment, and it will not only improve the quality of the coffee, but it also represents savings in production costs due to the rental of a washing machine and an improvement in working conditions in coffee farm Los Maderos.
