Origin Trip 2018

Since 2009, the Social Enterprise @ Goizueta has been traveling to Latin America to learn more about the amazing folks who work at the core of our specialty coffee industry.

Our 2018 GFE Origin Trip, led by Professor Peter Roberts, is designed to expose travelers to the challenges faced by specialty coffee farmers who are working hard to turn their promising farms into prosperous small businesses.

Travelers will spend 3 days / 4 nights exploring Nicaragua’s coffee country landscapes, cupping specialty coffees with farmers, learning about what it takes to run a coffee farm (during the harvest season), and meeting our in-country roasting partner (Vega Coffee). All travelers must be 18 years or older. The cost is $1,295 per traveler which covers food, lodging, ground transportation, and a daily happy hour (not inlcuding airfare).

Farm Experience

After a trek through the northern mountains of Nicaragua, our group will arrive at the farm of one of our GFE farmers. You will have the chance to see where the coffee is grown, harvested, and prepared for shipment to the cooperative.

Cooperative Tour

After learning more about where coffee is grown, we will take a tour of a cooperative coffee mill. This is where coffee is processed and prepared for export to the US.  This is an important, but lesser known part of the supply chain.

Vega Visit

To finalize the trip, we stop by Vega Coffee in the beautiful mountain town of Estelí so you can see where our coffee is roasted and shipped to the US. This is an integral part of what makes our program unique.

WEDNESDAY – JANUARY 31st

  • Flight to Managua, Nicaragua
  • Drive to Estelí

THURSDAY – FEBRUARY 1st

  • Experience coffee farm and harvest activities at Finca San Antonio (hosted by GFE Farmer, Alexa Marin)

FRIDAY – FEBRUARY 2nd

  • See how coffee is processed at PRODECOOP (GFE partner cooperative)
  • Cup coffees at Vega Coffee’s facility (GFE coffee roaster)

SATURDAY – FEBRUARY 3rd

  • Return to Managua
  • Spend some free time in Granada

SUNDAY – FEBRUARY 4th

  • Flight to Atlanta
